My Story
Behind the Words
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, voices were all around me. I was surrounded by stories that needed to be told and I was eager to tell them. Writing then quickly became my first interest as a child, it was and still is my entertainment, escape and expressive outlet. The newsroom is my home and where I thrive. I once believed that successful newsrooms could only be physical spaces filled with reporters. However, the pandemic allowed me to debunk that premonition. When I began writing for publications, it was mid-pandemic and I was 1,352 miles from my Brooklyn apartment, stuck in Trinidad and Tobago. I recorded plenty of experiences being in Trinidad for a year and even got to publish one. Correspondingly, I was able to publish many of my most compelling work and conduct some of my most compelling interviews of my collegiate career, on my great-aunt's floral couch, in her Port of Spain townhouse. That's when I realized that the world is my newsroom, and that it went far beyond the trite. Journalists are the voice of people everywhere and it's our responsibility to find and tell the stories that need to be told. I want to seek out those stories and tell them for as long as I can.

I look at the world through a writer’s lens. I see stories in everyday life just waiting to be told and do my best to be the medium through which they reach the page.
