1993, Christian with R&B, Pop, and rock influences
This track comes from Helen Baylor's 1993 Album "Start All Over"
I grew up hearing, “70x7 you’ve forgiven me, and you keep cleansing me,and placing my sins into the sea of forgetfulness.”
This was the first Helen Baylor song I came across. My mom would often cue this one repeatedly on her YouTube playlist. She always paused at the lyric “I’m the one who keeps reminding you, over and over again.”
As a freshly saved fourteen year old, finding my way as a disciple of Christ, this song often resonated with me. It’s a sweet message that reminds believers of a concept often forgotten and that is: We are already forgiven. God does not remember our sin, but we fight so hard to remind him.
With lyrics like “I stand before you guilty, and unworthy, how can I be forgiven and Holy?” This track reflects the hearts and minds of many believers who do not feel worthy to come back to Christ, but reminds them of Jesus’s promise, the reason why he suffered on the cross.
Matthew 18: 21, 22 says. "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven." A lot of us tend to stay in a slump of guilt, shame, and condemnation without realizing God already forgave us. When you feel that way, pull up the aforementioned verse and then turn on this track.
Along with the needed message, this track embodies a late 80s, early 90s, R&B, pop-rock ballad style. Its melody is backed by electric guitar that crescendos and builds up during the chorus and toward the latter of the song. It additionally has strong and smooth synth piano as well as soft percussion. And of course, Baylor’s vocals never fail to please the ears, as I’ve said prior and will continue to say, I think of her as the Whitney Houston of Gospel.
